Mildura Squash Inc. – Autumn Pennant 2019 – Grand Final / Finals Report
Point “O” Five won a thrilling Division 1 Premiership contest against Undecided by only 1 game to take out the Autumn Pennant 2019.
The night started strong for Point “O” Five as Father / Son match up of Wayne Sparks and Zac Sparks took the court, senior Sparks (Wayne) was calm under pressure and scored the first rubber winning in 3 well played games against a solid effort from junior Sparks (Zac).
Donna Fisher took the court against a very consistent and most improved Wade Stephens. The crowd where treated to a solid match of cat and mouse as players looked to get the upper hand. Stephens (Undecided) took the 1st game, however it was Fisher (Point “O” Five) who knew if she could just tighten up her game, she could earn a game or even un upset win. Fisher was able to win the 2nd game going all the way to 17-16. Looking a little mentally tiered she (Fisher) was not able to continue with the same vigour as was her effort for the 2nd game, as Stephens got on top in the match and earned victory in 4 games to level the rubbers up at 1-1
The crowd knew this was going to make other results very close as it was looking like the night would go down to the wire. Jeannette Vear was ruthless as she accounted for Steve Pongrac in 3 games giving Point “O” Five a 2nd rubber and 1 game advantage. Some quick calculations where made, and it was known that even if the final rubber went the way of Kevin Healy (Undecided) who defeated Doug Garsed in 3 games as was predicted, the match was still played at a high level.
Once the scores had been finalised it was clear that the great effort of a consistent and steady team of Point “O” Five come out on top as the Division 1 Premiers.
In the 3 / 4 Play Off it was 4 rubbers to nil win for Hard Knutts over CC’s & Dried. Paul Takacs was able to account for Gary Callaway in 3 games. A marathon effort by Michael Penna saw him get a win over Chris Stamos in 5 games. Graeme Whyte had a walkover win against Simon Morrison and Chris Tassone was to good for Cameron Whyte winning in 3 games.

In Division 2, it was the solid Team Three who scored Division 2 Premiership honours over Team Two winning 2 rubbers to 1.
Gloria Jago started the night well for Team Three as she was able to use the colder conditions to take advantage of a slower more precision style of game play to defeat her fast hard hitting opponent in Chris Edlington to win in 4 games and get a 1 rubber to nil lead.
Michelle Le Roux (Team Three) was in a battle against opponent in Chelsea Thornton (Team Four) with the crowd treated to an amazing match that when for well over 1 hour on court. Thornton was able to play some crucial winning shots at vital points in each game to get the upper hand and at the end of very entertaining effort, gave her team every chance of winning after she (Thornton) won the 5 game thriller and levelled the night at 1 rubber each.
Players from both teams knew that the winner of the final match up would take premiership honours. Natalina Mammone showing no sign of nerves against opponent Heather Laity was able to close out a great team win as she won in 3 games against Laity. Team Three certainly the most consistent team of the Autumn Pennant 2019 deserved a very solid win.
In the 3 / 4 Play Off it was Team One defeating Team Four 2 rubbers to nil. Fill In young junior Grace Sparks has made great improvement and was able to get a good win in 5 games against Kane Woolfrey. Chelsea Thornton filling in for the injured Maz Valentino was able to score the 2 rubber for Team One as she defeated Helen Munro in 3 solid games.
